Web hosting is where a company host your website on the Internet. You store your html files (web pages) on their web servers (computers) so that people can access them over the Internet. You can pay a monthly or annual fee for this service or find a hosting company that offers free hosting.

There are three main types of hosting: free, shared, and dedicated. I will explain each below.

Free Hosting

Free hosting is great for smaller sites. The service provider will offer free hosting in exchange that you allow them to place ads on your site. The ads may be banners or popup's depending on what free host you choose. Usually personal or family sites are perfect for this service.

Shared Hosting

Shared hosting is great for medium size personal or business sites. The hosting provider will host your site on one server with several other sites. This is cost effective and is what most website owners choose.

Dedicated Hosting

Dedicated hosting is for large websites with a lot of traffic. It is more expensive and is not recommend for most sites. With dedicated hosting you get your very own dedicated server where only your site files are located.

Before you choose your hosting type, remember that you may always upgrade to a dedicated server if your site grows.
